FIU STUDENTS STUDY AND PRODUCE INSTALLATION ART

Thirteen FIU students studied and produced installation art in a studio art course taught this spring by Tori Arpad in association with several Wolfsonian staff members. Students toured the museum, interacted with the museum staff, studied the collection, and produced their own installations. The student work, which responded to Wolfsonian installations, comprised the exhibition Can We Be Your Objects?, on view April 8-9 in the Design District's Newton Building. The exhibition space was donated by Dacra President and Wolfsonian board member Craig Robins.

"I had never taken on a task as difficult as this before," says FIU fine arts major Jessica Casinelli." The guided tours by the curator and exhibition designer helped show us how each individual element needs to be considered in order to create a whole show that works well. The library staff members were helpful in bouncing around ideas and finding source materials. Their opinion of our work assisted us in finding the right direction for our pieces."

The exhibition created by the students commented on The Wolfsonian collection and installations by exploring our complex relationships with the objects we create, collect, and curate. According to the exhibit statement, "the works in this exhibition aim to heighten our awareness of the significance of the objects and images that populate our world."

"The museum was perfect for this course. This collection is an incredible resource for contemporary artists," notes Kate Rawlinson, assistant director for education and public programs at The Wolfsonian, who worked with Professor Arpad to design the course. Wolfsonian staff members Marianne Lamonaca, Sarah Schleuning, Richard Miltner, Frank Luca, and Nicholas Blaga all worked intensively with the students.
