SHOP. EAT. THINK.
After months of dust, noise, and temporary walls, The Wolfsonian’s new café and expanded museum store are set to be unveiled this spring. Watch for e-mail and Web site announcements for an exact opening date.
Visitors to the new space will pass through a wide hall, adjacent to the front entrance of the museum, highlighted by the Bipolar Dynamo, one of Thomas Edison’s first steam engines, which was a gift to the museum from Finlay B. Matheson. Entering through the doors into the new store/café, patrons will shop and dine among fixtures that range from the stylish late 1800s to design of the 21st Century.
“Our building was designed as a vault,” comments Cathy Leff, museum director. “It was meant to keep people and the elements out.” The new facility, designed by architect Mark Hampton and Wolfsonian Exhibition Designer Richard Miltner, will have windows overlooking Washington Avenue, giving passersby a view into the museum.
