IN PRAISE OF SHADOWS by Jun’ichiro Tanizaki (1933)—This
essay by novelist Jun’ichiro Tanizaki examines Japanese architecture
and design, discussing the relationship between darkness and light
and celebrating the role that shadows play in defining a space.
Moderated by Marilys R. Nepomechie, associate professor,
School of Architecture, FIU.
CINEMA 2 AT THE WOLF is an
ongoing documentary film series presented in collaboration with WPBT–Channel

AMERICAN MASTER: PETE SEEGER, THE POWER OF SONG (2007,
USA, Jim Brown, 90 min, color, DVD)—Eighty-eight-year-old folk
singer Pete Seeger, known for such rousing songs as “If I Had a
Hammer” and “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy,” recalls the spirit of
fortitude and hope of the early civil rights movement. This
documentary explores Seeger’s lifetime of political activism from
the 1950s anti- Communist witch hunts through today’s protests
against the war in Iraq.

DECO AND DESIGN TOUR—This two-hour adventure begins with a walking
tour of the Art Deco District, then moves inside to explore The
Wolfsonian’s collection. The tour focuses on New Deal architecture
and the exhibition A Bittersweet Decade: The New Deal in America,
1933–43, on view at The Wolfsonian. Presented with the Miami
Design Preservation League. Limited to 20. RSVP and advance ticket
purchase required by July 21 for tour on July 25 and by August 25
