VISIONARIES IN EXILE January 24-February 23, 1997 Overview Visionaries in Exile was the museum's first extensive CD-ROM presentation focusing on modern architecture. Organized by the Austrian Cultural Institute New York and Architektur Zentrum Wien, and co-sponsored in Miami by The Wolfsonian and University of Miami School of Architecture, the installation recalled the history of twenty Austrian architects who immigrated to the United States before 1941. Among those featured were Richard Neutra, Josef Frank, Victor Gruen, Joseph Urban, and Rudolph Schindler. The CD-ROM traced the development of Austrian and American Modernism by allowing the museum visitor to explore a wealth of multimedia information, including 2,000 images and five hours of spoken texts, available at four interactive computer stations. The material examined the exchange of ideas between Austrian-American architects and their contemporaries, such as Sigmund Freud, Frank Lloyd Wright, William Randolph Hearst, and Marcel Duchamp. Selections of furniture from The Wolfsonian's permanent collection by Neutra, Paul Frankl, and Schindler also were on view along with the CD-ROM installation.
