The symposium "Creator,
Collector, Catalyst: The University Art Museum in the Twenty-first
Century" was held in December 2006 and organized by The
Wolfsonian-FIU and Princeton University Art Museum. The symposium
explored various aspects of the university art museum and its
distinctive roles―as a nexus of scholarship in the arts, an innovator in
museum programming, a training ground for museum professionals, and a
platform for serving the cultural needs of the community.

The white paper by critic Michael F. Brenson, examines the multiple facets of the university museum, placing the discussions that emerged from these proceedings in a wider context. His critique, together with the questions he proposes for future consideration, allows us to consider how we may develop subsequent discussions more effectively and create a viable action plan to continue the work begun in Miami. The Wolfsonian–FIU is grateful to the Henry Luce Foundation for commissioning this paper. |
