Arm Chair, 1900 Designed by Peter Behrens (German, 1868-1940) Wood, leather, paint 41 x 22 x 24" TD1988.36.1 At Darmstadt, Behrens designed his home, complete with furnishings, including this dining room chair, for the 1901 exhibition. His first major architectural project, it was a bold personal statement and an example of the concept Gesamtkunstwerk - a total work of art where the building, its furnishings and its setting form an environmental whole. The dining room was the only light, airy room in the house, with white furniture and deep red accents. Back to German Design Reform Main Back to Collections Main |
