Competitions played an important role in the movement for design reform. One of the most significant was the House for an Art Lover, sponsored by the Journal for Interior Decoration in Darmstadt, Germany, which challenged architects to design a modern house where the building itself was the work of art. Although international entries had been encouraged, German national pride was wounded by the competition’s result. No first prize was awarded, but second prize went to the English architect M.H. Baillie Scott, while a special prize was given to Scottish designers Charles Rennie and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh. The published drawings by Mackintosh attest to the Arts and Crafts emphasis on design unity. On the Continent this concept was called Gesamtkunstwerk - a total work of art where the building, its furnishings, and its setting form an environmental whole.
